How to practice neutral cartoon colors
Gray and cream pages are useful because they remove the easy part of color guessing. You cannot rely on a bright hue label. Instead, you have to judge whether the shade is warmer, cooler, lighter, or more muted than your first memory.
Set saturation lower than feels natural, then use lightness to shape the final guess. If the color looks dirty, the hue may be too warm. If it looks metallic, it may be too cool. Repeat the palette after a colorful round to train subtle contrast.
